Forming an international consortium of technical and domain expertise the Next Generational Digital Identity for Learning (NGDIL) launch to focus on research and development of self-sovereign identity (SSI) technologies that can facilitate improved learning opportunities and accessibility in both academic and vocational education, in line with the UNESCO mandate for Lifelong Learning (LLL).

Guided by the UNESCO learning institute Koning Willem I College (KW1C) (NL) and UNESCO Learning City Oss (NL), the EU centred program brings together public and private entities to focus on the development and deployment of interoperable standards and learning technologies that can provide solutions to current challenges within the academic and vocational learning sectors.

With technology development and research lead by self-sovereign identity specialists Tangle Labs (DE) and Impierce Technologies (NL). NGDIL promotes and supports the use of standardised technology that can provide inclusive and accessible learning with a focus on micro-credentials, verifiable credentials, and open badges to support the progress of technology and standards that facilitate accessibility and interoperability in all areas of learning.

With a mission to validate the additional value and privacy Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) can provide institutions, businesses, and students within the educational sector, numerous EU institutions, businesses, and authorities will be invited to participate in pilots that will introduce interoperable SSI solutions that can provide decentralised and open-source credentials and badges built upon open standards.

A young man in casual clothes is holding a tablet whilst speaking to a small group of attentive young people who are sat on chairs in a small white room.

NGDIL will collaborate closely throughout the development of the pilots, to build a system of cross-industry tools that can facilitate student sovereignty of identity and portable verifiable credentials. The pilots will demonstrate that NGDIL can implement cross-industry and cross-border verification of educational credentials based on self-sovereign identity principles.

By empowering the user to control their own data, NGDIL will enable an entirely new way of sharing data. While normally companies and institutions need to develop customised data exchange mechanisms between themselves and their partners, NGDIL introduces a way to send any information through the user themselves as an intermediary.

Koning Willem I College Logo
About Koning Willem I College

Koning Willem I College is a place where talent flourishes. A place where the most beautiful things are created, cause we experiment, we inspire and above all: we do.

With us, a student does not sit in a classroom all day. We bring the profession in and education out. For a region that is proud of these talents and wants to keep them.

You can find our education everywhere. At the counter of the ICT desk, in the robotics lab, in our restaurant, outside on the street, in our garage, at the pharmacy around the corner or in our own theatre. You see our students everywhere!

We challenge them to bring out the best in themselves and their environment. To develop envious skills, which ultimately benefit us all. Skills that make us proud of who we are and what we do.

UNESCO Learning City Oss Logo
About UNESCO Learning City Oss

For UNESCO Learning City Oss, it is important that all residents can keep developing throughout their lives. We see personal development as an important part of solutions to current issues.

Oss has been a member of UNESCO Learning Cities since September 2022 and sees this designation as a motivator to continue building an infrastructure of lifelong development. We see the city and region as a rich, inclusive, and barrier-free learning environment. We envision a society where personal development is obvious and that also means that access to, and recognition of, development is a given.

A lifelong development infrastructure also has digital components to make (access to) development easier. An important task is to remove obstacles.  Complicated bureaucratic processes are no longer necessary while privacy and freedom of choice are paramount. Besides access to learning and development, recognition is also extremely important. With this project, we make development and recognition easier, reliable, fast, accessible, and safe.
